In 1875 Arthur Lasenby Liberty moved into 218a Regents Street and
employed his first 3 member of staff. Since then this luxurious timber
framed building has become a famous London landmark. Arthur brought
to London a collection of ornaments, fabric and objets d’art straight from
his Eastern Bazaar vision. With a society fond of items from Japan and
the Far East, this proved to be very successful and within 18 months Arthur
had to expand his business and went on to purchase the second half of 218a Regent Street. Liberty of London has become so successful that it is now seen as an iconic shopping experience. Indeed “Liberty is the chosen resort of the artist shopper” (Oscar Wilde) and that still rings true to this day.
The wise words underneath the clock at the Kingly Street entrance read: “No minute gone comes back again, take heed and see ye nothing do in vain"
