How can you choose the right lighting for your home?
Beautiful lighting can undoubtedly add the finishing touch to any interior. From kitchens and living rooms to bathrooms and hallways, carefully selected lighting can complement a design and harmonise a room. Creating the mood you desire should be as easy as flicking the switch.
To create the feel you desire in your interior, lighting needs to be thoroughly thought through, putting a lighting plan together before you start to decorate a room will help you to minimise any mistakes. Make a note of the features, artwork and furniture you would like to highlight and plan your lighting accordingly. Dark spaces especially will need extra attention. Always remember to use layers of light at different angles for maximum impact.”
How you can use lighting to highlight features in your interior?
It is amazing how easily you can highlight key features of a room with simple subtle lighting. Use down lights on pieces of furniture, wall art or kitchen islands to put a spotlight on those key features. A simple table lamp with a luxurious lamp shade can be used to highlight a nice coffee or side table.
Up lighting can be used on architectural features within a property. If your ceilings are a feature, then uplights will highlight this whilst bouncing light back around the room to give a subtle soft light. Backlights work well behind items like a coloured glass vase, to give the room a glow of colour.
The day started with the alarm going off at 6am, running around the house making sure both children were ready for my husband to take them to school, fishing Nemo (one of our fish who died overnight) out of the fish tank, feeding the cat then responding to a couple of emails prior to our meeting with our Local MP Will Quince at 9am. Will is a very down to earth MP, we spoke about our manufacturing process in great detail and also the possibility of exporting our lamp shades. Before Will left I presented him with a lampshade from our new personalised digital print lampshade range with an image of Palace of Westminster (House of Commons) on it. This was a digital image we used and then had it printed onto material which we then used to make a lampshade.
Will left our studio at about 10am and our social media pages started to get very busy with likes, re-tweets and comments – we even received some tweets from James Caan! Small Business Saturday UK did a fantastic job promoting our Small Business on the day – thank you Small Business Saturday UK! I would highly recommend any #SmallBiz100 to dedicate a full day to their Small Business 100 day to respond to Social Media and additional enquiries. But most importantly to have fun and enjoy your day in the limelight.

Wow what an exciting few months it has been at The Lampshade Company! We have been working furiously in the back ground updating our logo, images and website. With lots of wonderful help from James & Lissa at Phelan Barker who helped design the new logo, font and colours. Their expertise has enabled us to transform our look and bring it into the future.
Alongside this transformation we have re-designed our website, making it more customer focused and easy on the eye. Great ideas and work came from Kelly Molson and her team at Rubber Cheese who have really pulled out all the stops to provide a top class finish and easy navigation on the new website. We also now have a trade registration page where businesses can register to open a trade account and receive an online discount.
We are delighted to have been selected as winners at the North Essex Business Awards 2016, which took place at Braxted Park in Witham. We would like to thank Newsquest for organising such a great event!
Also a huge thank you Chelmsford College who were sponsors of the Small Business of The Year category and selected The Lampshade Company as the winners of this category – we are extremely proud and grateful, thank you!

This last week seems to have absolutely flown by! We’ve had our teeth stuck into a couple of commercial lamp shade orders and the shades are looking amazing, even if we do say so ourselves!
Well it’s Friday evening and the children have just broken up for the half-term and I’m very excited about the long weekend ahead (well it is the May Bank Holiday after all!) – working a little later this evening as I have a meeting to squeeze in at 5pm before relaxing on my 3 day break with the family.
Our new designer Liberty Art Fabric drum lampshade collection is an excellent choice for those looking for more of a traditional look. We have carefully selected from the Heritage, Nesfield and Jubilee collections. Each lampshade is hand made to order and finished off with a quality lining, the choice of lining colours include Gold, Silver and Champagne metallic linings which give a really luxurious high end finish.
These lamp shades are sure to be the talking point of any room. Why not visit our website to view our full range today!
A lampshade diffuser is designed to sit in the bottom of a ceiling pendant light shade to distract your eye from the light bulb. A lampshade diffuser is most useful when you have a larger ceiling shade, as the diameter is much wider and therefor the light bulb is easier to see and sometimes doesn’t look all that pleasing unless your eyes are distracted from the bulb in another (for example with a bright colourful lampshade lining similar to those in our Mix & Match range).
Secondly, you need to decide how much light you want in the room.
At The Lampshade Company, we have two different diffuser options. To allow as much light as possible I would suggest a frosted opaque diffuser. Alternatively, there is a white non – transparent diffuser with a hole in the centre to allow the light to shine through the middle. This doesn’t let as much light through as the frosted option, however it does have a nice modern look to it. Please see the image below of the different options available with the lights both on and off, this will give you an idea of how your diffuser will look at different times.
Thirdly, how do you fit a lampshade diffuser?
Our lampshades diffusers are designed specifically for our ceiling pendant shades and are all laser cut to ensure a perfect fitting our lampshades. Once your lampshade has been fitted (and whilst the power is still off) simply flex your diffuser and slide it into the bottom of your lampshade so that it sits just above the bottom ring and hey presto, your diffuser is fitted! You can swap and change it as you often as you wish to suit different times of year and of course your décor!
